Paul’s motivation for praying and thanking God for the Colossians is in light of some of the things that’s been heard. In fact, the word “heard” is used four times in Colossians 1:3-14. It is pretty clear that communication was pivotal in establishing a relationship between Paul and the Colossians. But what was conveyed to produce such thankfulness in prayer?

Ancient biblical letters were very different from today’s standard. Firstly, the writer states who they are at the beginning of the letter. Secondly, the intended reader is named immediately after. Because of this, we know right away who wrote the letter and who it was intended for. The key difference, however, is not in form but in content and authorship.

Why is this day called Resurrection Sunday? Jesus died on Friday and Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 says he was raised on the third day. So his resurrection should be on Monday! But we are thinking in terms of a full 72 hours (three days). That’s not how Jews, in those days, reckoned time.

Eucharist Command

Participating in Holy Communion is a biblical command.

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

So we eat and drink because God calls us to eat and drink. And not only do we eat and drink, we do it remembering what Jesus did on the cross. In fact, we are commanded to do that too!

But eating, drinking and remember is not enough. Paul also tells us that how we eat, drink and remember matters too!

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)

The only thing that should motivate us in obeying the command to eat, drink and remember is worship. If you are here to worship, then come and partake. Fear not the Lord, for he is good. He is worthy to be praised!
