We Need Faith

June 6, 2012 · Will

[Devotional based on the sermon: Not Far]

In Mark 12, Jesus and the scribe agree that the greatest commandment is to love God. But in verse 34, Jesus says this to the scribe: “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” At first glance, this seems like a commendation. That is, until we realize that crossing the finish line is better than being “not far” from it! It is obviously better to be “in” the kingdom of God, rather than “not far” from it!

Jesus seems to suggest that knowing the commandment to love God is not enough to get us into the kingdom. We need faith to give ourselves over to God too! I could know what God says and even believe in what he says, but that doesn’t mean I love God. For that to happen, we need faith.

  1. Read 1 John 4:7-19.
  2. How does faith bring about a love for God?
